Off Season Activity – For a Specific Objective – Rehab

Something old became something new - a trip to the climbing gym.
Something old became something new – a trip to the climbing gym.

So this happened. I’ve kept my streak of climbing at least 1x a year alive. The last time I tied in was with Mark Twight last December in SLC.

This trip to my local gym though has a purpose other than communing with a good friend and keeping a “streak” alive. And I’m planning on it becoming a regular occurrence this winter.

Cycling is very specific. That specificity has a cost. Being very cycling-centric limited my full recovery from my fractured femur last year. I’ve done some pretty extensive physical therapy following my fractured pelvis and ribs from August of this year – most of it focused on the femur (the surrounding muscles never recovered 100%). When I broke my tibia and fibula back in 2000 I was able to get full range of motion back from a lot of rock climbing which I was doing at the time. I decided that I was going to give that program a try again this time.

Range of motion, flexibility, weight transfer, body awareness – all important components in climbing AND all important components to getting my structurally repaired femur and pelvis and all of the surrounding muscles rehabbed and firing at 100% again. Seems like a solid plan to me.

Oh, and extra bonus: I flashed a 5.10. #Celebrag
